When I start working with a new client, I like to first sit down and map out their whole learning program.
Typically, an organization already has training programs that they offer either to their employees and/or customers. However, at times, there are gaps. Thus, I’ll start by asking a number of important discovery questions:
- “What do you have now?”
- “What do you do now?”
- “What kind of training do you offer now?”
- “Where do you see yourselves in a year, 3 years, 5 years from now in terms of developing your overall learning program?”
Once I have those answers, I help to evaluate and identify what would lend itself well to a digital environment—what’s an easy starting point that makes sense. Moreover, we then assess the next logical direction for moving forward. For example, I would never suggest that you just flip a switch and go from all in-person training to all online training overnight because there are complexities surrounding the adoption of new tools and a new way of learning within your organization. It makes sense to start somewhere with something that makes good business sense.

Employee Onboarding
For many organizations, onboarding is a low-hanging fruit because, for example, you might have an employee who will start today, next week, or next month. And what often happens with employee onboarding is that it’s executed poorly. Those new employees will have to wait for the next available course, which could be weeks away. That doesn’t make any sense because, in the meantime, they could already be undertaking a number of work tasks that may or may not be correct. Thus, transitioning your current onboarding program to a digital one is an excellent starting point. Your new employees will be able to instantly access new information and could be up and running within just a few days.
