Everybody has an idea of what eLearning is, and it’s generally based on their own experiences. For example, if you’ve attended webinars involving speakers and PowerPoint slide decks, you might think, “Oh, that’s what eLearning is.” Similarly, if you’ve completed university or college courses that incorporated documents for you to download and assignments for you to send electronically, you might think that’s what eLearning entails.
However, eLearning is actually a spectrum of digital choices that you make based on what it is you’re trying to accomplish.eLearning is a spectrum of digital choices that you make based on what it is you're trying to accomplish. Click To Tweet
In particular, when you’re talking about webinars, you’re talking about what’s called VILT (Virtual Instructor Led Training). That’s the live online environment and it’s a whole area of study in itself in terms of the technology required, the design skills needed, and the skills of the presenter associated with those kinds of events.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have what’s called self-directed training. That means the learner and the instructor are not there at the same time. It could be the middle of the night when the person feels inspired to learn about something and they go online. It could be as simple as visiting YouTube, searching something up, and watching a short video on it. That’s self-directed learning.
However, in a more structured case, you need to gather and organize a multitude of content. Specifically, you need to apply different methodologies of interaction and design it into a course that the person goes and completes at a convenient time. Courses can then be bundled into certificate programs.
This is the space that our WeLoveLearning team has occupied for the last 14 years. We started out designing training for the in-person corporate classroom more than 30 years ago, then grew into that live online space and, eventually, evolved into designing for the self-directed space. It’s a more complex space in terms of the tools required, the design skills required, and the sophistication of the solutions.
Bottom line: eLearning is a spectrum and it goes all the way from the live online events (the simplest being a PowerPoint slide deck and speaker) to self-directed certificate programs that are made up of many components.
