Have learners changed over the last decade?
People say learners have changed, but really, the learning components have changed. What you needed to do in a classroom is as true today online as it was in an in-person setting.
At We Love Learning, we follow an experiential design model—a strategy where we design online training activities in a four-step process:
- First, we take our learners through an “experience” within the online training.
- They then go through a reflection exercise to extract key knowledge.
- Next, the generalization phase: the learner draws conclusions about what happened in the experience— the pros and cons, the good and the bad.
- Lastly, the ability to apply the training and learning to their life or work.
In contrast to the in-person classroom of ten years ago, we now have a different set of tools in our digital toolbox to move learners through these experiences in a meaningful and relevant way.
Certain elements of learning in the online environment are better taught there than through in-person teaching. A great example is role-play: it can be more effective carried out in the digital world than it ever was in the in-person classroom (we know that no one liked the ‘dreaded role-play’).
Different Technology to Enhance Learning Experiences
We often hear all these acronyms that have something to do with eLearning; AR and VR are two common ones. AR is Augmented Reality and VR is Virtual Reality.
Augmented Reality brings elements of the online, digital, or virtual world and layers them on top of elements of the real world—thereby enhancing the real world.
Zappar is a great tool that allows you to take learning embedded into a QR code and use Augmented Reality to deliver that training anytime and anywhere. For example: you can put a code onto a sticker and place it on a forklift, snow blower, or piece of rental equipment. With a smartphone, a worker could scan the code and have a one-minute microlearning moment about that piece of equipment.
On the job and ongoing training is important because new technology can impact your organization’s health and safety record, employee productivity, or the longevity of your equipment because of its proper (or improper) use.
