I recently stumbled upon this delightful little hat shop. Even though I was NOT in the market for a new hat, I was drawn in by the vibrance and variety of what I could see through the tiny shop window. Once inside, I realized there was much more to this store than I had thought.
To start, there were several ‘sections‘ to the shop: sunhats, rain hats, winter hats, fascinators…the list goes on. All of the items were arranged in a way that I could fully appreciate them. I could view them easily and the groupings made sense to me. Similar types of hats were grouped together and, within each group, they were further arranged in a visually appealing way. I was fascinated and in awe of this little store.
As I wandered around this treasure trove of head gear, I started to think about how this store is just like an LMS (Learning Management System). Similar types of hats were grouped together, which is just like how we group similar types of courses together into Areas of Study within an LMS! I could easily identify an area of interest (e.g. sunhats) and explore just that area. Also, within that area, everything invited me to fully engage. There was quality content, variety, and it was all arranged in a visually appealing way.
I know I may be stretching your patience by now, but my point is that when you create self-directed eLearning solutions to be deployed to your employees, they need to be high-quality experiential learning experiences. They also need to be arranged in such a way that they are easy for the learner to access (this is where an LMS can help with content curation as well as record-keeping).
So yes, this little hat shop makes me think of eLearning. It’s how my brain works. I see the world through a lens of learning and, at every turn, I am thinking about the learning journey that a person is on at that very moment.
