While an ‘LMS’ has become a popular choice for organizing, storing, and tracking online training, many still have questions. What is a Learning Management System, and is it a good way to deliver your training?
LMS stands for a Learning Management System, and it’s a way for you to organize your digital learning assets. These assets can be any digital learning asset – courses, infographics, podcasts, videos, or any combination of all those pieces.
Imagine if you start creating a lot of digital learning assets. At some point, it becomes hard to keep track of them all. When we first started, we were creating a lot of assets for some clients, yet many assets ended up going unused, lost in the website’s background. Even with a search tool, these assets were difficult to find; people didn’t even know what to look for. That’s when we first started exploring the idea of an LMS.
What is a Learning Management System? Why do you need one?
An LMS helps you to organize all those digital learning assets and bundle them together to create a course and then bundle courses together to create Certificate Programs. You can say, “In order for the learner to complete this course, they need to do this, this, this, and this,” and then when they’ve done that, they get credit for that course.
Let’s say someone on your team is working their way through a Supervisor Skills Certificate Program. There are many things you want them to do in order to get the certificate. It’s hard to keep track—how do you know when they’ve completed all of those components?
The answer is a Learning Management System. All those components would exist inside your Learning Management System. As your team member completes each component, the system keeps track of that, and when they’ve completed all requisite parts, the system issues them a badge or certificate.
