
Participation in the labour market is an important part of life for anyone who wishes to achieve independence and financial security. But this can be especially difficult for people with disabilities, who face many barriers to employment.
It is with tremendous pride that I tell you about the series of live online (instructor-led) courses that my team and I developed earlier this year, with EARN (the Employment Accessibility Resource Network).
I know, first hand, that persons with disabilities typically have a more difficult time both finding and maintaining meaningful work…or even just a ‘job’. My 20-year-old son is on the Autism Spectrum. He is super-polite. Super-conscientious. Super-reliable. But he struggles with executive functioning…that thing we need in order to manage multi-step tasks. And as a consequence, it is hard for him to ‘keep up’ with the pace of others in the workplace around him. And of course, he is afraid to disclose to his employer(s) that he needs a bit of help or some minor accommodations to help him be successful.
15 years ago, when he was diagnosed, I vowed to use my skills to change the workplace in whatever ways I can – so that they are safe spaces for everyone. And this latest project with EARN and its partners puts us one step closer to creating better, healthier and more supportive workplaces.
