
I recently registered for yet another live online conference—two, in fact. Wow, there are a lot available these days! Less than an hour in, I realized that this was going to be yet another passive “learning” experience. Another day of sitting in front of the screen, being bombarded by “Death-by-PowerPoint” presentations.
So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I picked up my laptop and headed down the hallway. Over the following hour, I managed to clean out my closet (something I have had on my to-do-list for a while) and now I feel so much better!
How is it that I could clean out my closet and still “be” at that conference? Clearly, nothing was expected of me…and therein lies the big problem with most of the live online instructor-led sessions that I see these days. As learners, there are rarely expectations of us. Nothing to do but listen. Sure, the odd person may ask you to “type into the chat box,” but that seems to be the extent of learner interaction that is asked of us. And so, we multitask. We check email and LinkedIn, work on reports, and, sometimes, we clean out our closets.
But, it should not be that way!
That takes more than knowing how to log into a platform. It takes more than knowing how to use PowerPoint and share your screen. It takes good design.
