One of the prominent learning shifts we’re seeing as of late involves colleges and universities. Instead of delivering classes or lectures in an in-person room, professors are transitioning online and incorporating digital tools such as Zoom, Webex, or Blackboard.
Lecturing Does Not Work
What I’m noticing, however, is that many professors and teachers are not utilizing all of the tools available to them. They are simply opening their camera and conducting a lecture.
To use an old adage: it’s in one ear and out the other.
Learners Need to Participate
Learning in an online environment is optimized when the learner can participate in their training. For example, with interactive presentations, learners are not merely listening to the presentation—they are seeing great visuals, teaching aids, and are participating in various hands-on digital exercises in order to engage with and better understand the material.
When designing for the in-person classroom using the Experiential Design Model, learners need to: have an experience; reflect on it; draw some conclusions about the material; and then decide how it can be applied in the real world. This is no different in an online classroom.
Teachers: Get Creative
My advice to teachers around the world right now is to learn how to use the basic digital tools and then get creative. Think about how you engaged your learners in an in-person environment and identify how you can recreate those engaging, interactive activities with your learners digitally. From polling, QR codes, and phone apps, there are a myriad of captivating ways to engage learners. And for professors who are willing to become proficient at using online tools and techniques, they are able to bring the Experiential Design Model to life in the online classroom, in ways that we could not even imagine in the in-person one.
