You no longer need to visit a library or museum to access knowledge
Prior to the last decade, when you wanted to learn about a topic, you really needed to visit a museum like the one pictured above or at the very least, head to a library. Nowadays, I pass by this beautiful piece of architecture while out riding my bicycle but when my son was a toddler (almost 20 years ago), we headed inside this building at least once a month to explore new information and fill his head with new knowledge.
But the Internet changed all that. Today, when I want to learn something, my fingers take a stroll on my keyboard and voilá – within seconds, I have access to articles, videos and even courses on the topic of my choice.
eLearning has changed the face of education and while we have come to yearn face-to-face encounters as a result of the pandemic, we must also recognize that eLearning has opened up the world of education to citizens across the globe (not just during the pandemic) and will continue to do so.
Previously, unless you lived in an urban centre, you had to travel to seek education. Not only was it time consuming and often difficult to coordinate, but for many, it was cost-prohibitive, meaning that most people continued to be excluded. It’s pretty simple – eLearning makes education and knowledge more accessible to more persons, regardless of their geographic location and/or socio-economic status. And for that reason alone, I love eLearning.
Let’s work together to build a more accessible and just society.
